balkan black box

Good bye, balkan black box!

During the time of its existence, balkan black box was the only German festival for film, music, exhibitions, literature, debate, theatre, performance from or about South East Europe. Then, the post-socialist countries to Westerners resembled a "black box", since the reasons of war, political and economic crisis were hardly understood. bbb hence strived to open the black box, to portray the Balkans in a differentiated way and - sometimes - also polemically. In the Balkans, arts and culture are the most developed ways for societal analysis and critique. Hence, bbb used artistic and cultural media for its ends. In short, balkan black box was a political festival, expressed through arts and culture.

Since 2009, balkan black box does not stage performances anymore. There are plenty of reasons for it. One and foremost ist he dire situation of cultural funding; furthermore the declining number of Berliners with background in the (West-)Balkans. Last but not least, life goes on for those who supported the festival in the past: Kids and profession leave little room for extravaganzas. The end of bbb perhaps also happens during times when regional labels like „the Balkans“ do not make sense anymore. Instead, many more individual conncetions between Southeast- and Central-Europe have evolved. The black box has opened a crack.
The bbb team thanks ist numerous supporters, co-operation partners and the many followers of the festival. And, citing the title of one of the last events: „Good Bye, Balkans!“
